Mundgod, February 4: The pilot edition of the PATANG league concluded successfully with Coach Ganesh’s team from Dharwad leading the points table. Organized by Bridges of Sports Foundation, the final league of the season saw more than 150 young participants who toiled through the hot, humid weather to gather points for their respective teams.
The flag hoisting done by head coach Rizwan and one of the top athletes, Shrinidhi marked the opening of the league.Next on the track were the individual athletes and with the rest of their teams behind them, they strained every sinew to score as many points as they could. The multiple lap events were a little more sedate but equally competitive as the lead within the race changed hands number of times.
Sunil, from Dharwad, won the Best Male Athlete title with a timing of 11.09 in the 100m sprint, while 12-year-old Sahana was adjudged the Young athlete of the year. Fifteen promising athletes identified through their performances throughout the league were also selected for a High-Performance camp to be conducted at Manipal.
Apart from commemorating victories, the league also aims at imparting lessons on sportsman spirit and camaraderie to children.The young spirited athletes showed great zeal and excitement throughout the season.
Speaking on the occasion, international athlete and Asian games medallist Kamala Siddi, said that the performances of the athletes in the league show a renewed hope in the future of Indian athletics. Kamala Siddi who started training under the SAG scheme when she was just 12, went on to break records at continental pentathlon. With this new grassroots training structure, she hopes that the community will continue the sports legacy and rise above any insinuations aimed at demoralizing the children from the lesser privileged areas.
